I've completely dropped AdSense because it was performing so poorly on my sites & blogs. Since switching to a mixture of text ads and image ads with various affiliate programs (Affiliate Junction, Amazon, etc.) I have had a lot more success. I think the sites look nicer, too.

The simpler the overall blog design is, then the better the click through rate will be too. That's what I've discovered. Many people wanting to make adsense money have too many things in the sidebars and extravagant decorations, which is useless for earning ad dollars.

I may test out at a later date what gets a better CTR but this is doing pretty good at the moment. Aesthetics are not the be all and end all when it comes to blog design. Especially if you want to get clicks on your adds. However saying that, in the future I will move away from having adwords because they are ugly and generally don’t pay thaaaat well, but they are easy while your traffic isn’t massive.

Interesting article. From an aesthetic perspective, I think the ad and an image is too much. Why not go with just the ad or an image-only ad?
