Do You Capitalise On Your Blog Comments?

capitalising on blog comments

What do you do when your blog gets a comment? Is it just another comment or is it an opportunity for growth?

Here are 4 essential moves to capitalise on comments:

Reply

If a comment has a question, it is a no-brainer that you should respond. But if it doesn’t should you respond? If you can without being fake or weird then you should.

Why?

It builds the community within your blog.

It adds to the conversation on your blog.

It invites more comments.

A good reply adds to your expert status.

Each reply increases the perceived popularity of an article. (25 comments looks better than 15 comments, even if 10 are your own).

Email The Commentator

Sometimes questions are too long or complicated to answer via a comment reply. If so you are more than welcome to send an email.

Emailing commentators can be a great opportunity to promote your stuff without being rude. (e.g. you might respond to a comment and add: “you can also check out my ebook which covers the question you asked in a lot more detail.”)

Comment Back

Return commenting on their blog is a great way to connect with your readers. Not only will they like the personal touch but they will also be more inspired to comment on your blog in the future.

Follow Them On Social Networks

A commentator is obviously interested in the blog they just commented on so why not add them to your social network. So long as you treated them well they will accept your request and then you have another avenue to promote your future posts and other offers.

Yes, good tips here! In fact, I also feel if a person takes the time & effort to leave a comment on your blog, it is only polite to reply. I stopped visiting blogs where the authors didn't have time to reply to their comments. And I also agree with the suggestion that you return the "house call"! Good tips here Tim. I don't have a blog on "blogging tips", so I simply incorporate these things in my own blog management! And that's all. Mine is more of a personal blog, with philosophical insights into life, love etc. Sometimes I "rant" there! Ha ha ha! Feel free to visit it whenevr you have time for some light stuff! :-)

Replying to comments encourages new visitors and can draw out the regular readers. It’s a good community builder if you comment on the person’s blog, but that can be time consuming. Also it works best if the blog is in a similar niche. Sometimes I pick up on how the person is implementing a tutorial and respond on their blog or in the reply. Also since my background is design, I often comment in the reply with any feedback, showing I did visit. This reminds us that our commenting systems must have a subscribe to these comments checkbox!
