“At Least Ya’ll Feel Something”

Whether it’s “George Bush doesn’t care about black people”, storming out of awards ceremonies or this latest stunt with Swift, it seems like he has a way of making you feel something, a way of pulling on your heart strings and getting a response.. from the masses.

Here’s the three step strategy to going viral like Kanye West

1. Be Bold

Talk about the thing that everyone is thinking. Don’t let the crowd sit there and think.. “hmm I thought Beyonce was better.. oh we’ll we can talk about that at the after party.. *clap and smile*”. Say something, pick a side and put it out there. The closer to the moment the more people who will talk about you, (also the more likely you are to offend someone).

Imagine if Kanye had waited till the end of the show to make his “announcement”, what about at the after show to reporters? How about On the Jay Leno 2 days later (would there have even been a Jay Leno?), what about if 6 months down the track he mentions it on his blog.

Be the first, be bold, risk it all.

2. Shoot First, Apologise Later

He has a way of apologising which almost helps him recover, if not to the world, at least his loyal, album buying, supporters. Kanye’s next album launch is going to be more high profile because of this event, built on a reputation as someone who just speaks his mind, (sometimes when he shouldn’t). If every statement needed to be okayed by a publicist he would never be such a spectacle.

Don’t censor yourself (too much), and apologise once you realise you’ve stepped over the line.

3. Release An Album

Even better, release it on a loaded date.. (sept 11) people will talk and people will buy. The story of Kanye VS 50 Cent spread like peanut butter and “Graduation” (Kanye’s 3rd album) sold just shy of 1 million copies in it’s first week.

Once everyone knows who you are, sell something, sell a lot of something.

Outro

In the song “Bring Me Down” from his second album “Late Registration” (2.5 million sales..) there’s a line that goes “Everybody feels a way about K but at least y’all feel something” which seems to be at the heart of Kanye’s controversy. He’s attracted to making bold statements about things that will make us feel something, good or bad.

Keep an eye out for the uncertain topics of your niche, make a bold statement, even if its lame, just make them feel something.

Using this website you can see what people are saying in real time and search the results. Basically you can search keywords that are relevant to your niche and follow those with tweets that are interesting. This is a great way to follow targeted people, but you need to have a lot of spare time, and be willing to get carpal tunnel. Check out how to cut through the spam in twitter search.

Twollow.com

Twollow will automatically follow users based on keywords. All you need to do is set up a few keywords and it will automatically follow users for you while you focus on more important things. The only problem is it’ll only follow about 50-100 users a day. At a follow back rate of 20% it would take more than 2 years to get 10,000 followers. You need something else.

Follow Based On Followers

Following based on followers is another way to get targeted followers. If you are a golf instructor chances are people that follow other golf instructors on twitter will be interested in you too (and you’ll be interested in them). You can either find people on twellow.com or wefollow.com then manually follow each of their followers or use..

FlashTweet.com

With Flash Tweet you can enter a certain user and automatically follow their followers. Simple enter your twitter details and flashtweet will log you in and give you the option to search a users followers. Once you have completed the search you will see a list of about 100 users, simple select all and follow. Rinse and repeat until you have followed your daily limit.

Flashtweet also gives you the option to search by keywords. This is a new feature and can be used when you start to feel the carpal tunnel creeping in after a few hours on twitter.search.com.

Follow Based On Profile

Following users based on their profile can be a good way of connecting with tweeters who feel strongly about a certain topic. Our bio generally contains the stuff we are really interested in. This is the most painstaking process but may just produce the best results.

Twellow.com And Wefollow.com

These sites let you type in search terms based on users profiles and categories. If you are targeting golfers simply search that variable and a list of names will come up. Choose the ones you like and follow away. Twellow is the easier option as it lets you sign in to the site and follow with just one click, while Wefollow looks nicer it just redirects you to their twitter page, making it two clicks to follow each tweeter.

Auto Unfollow

Once you start following a few users you will notice two things. 1, not every one follows you back. 2, twitter limits your following to followers ratio. This means you need to cull the people you have followed who aren’t following you back before you can follow more users.

Twitter Karma

To unfollow those who haven’t followed you back yet simply log into Twitter Karma every few days and show only those your following, then check all and bulk unfollow and it does the rest for you. A fairly simple process but when you need to repeat it every few days it does get quite tiresome.

Auto Follow Back

Its good etiquette to follow back tweeters who follow you. However due to the increasing amount of spam following everyone back has its problems. So you can either go through your new followers list every few days and choose the people you want to follow or you can auto followback and then unfollow people who make a mess of your twitter stream or DMs. I recommend the later and to do it I use..

Tweet Later

Sign up to Tweet Later, register your twitter account (you can have as many as you want) and then check the auto follow box and it does the rest. There are dozens of other services that will automatically follow back for your, but the reason I use Tweet Later is that it gives you many other options such as Auto Unfollow, Auto Dm’s, track keywords and that’s just the free version. Check it out at tweetlater.com.

This will get you there… eventually. Think about how long it takes when you have just one account, now try with 2 or 3! So when crippling wrist cramp just isn’t an option check out…

The $55 Way

For those who actually have other things they want to do, there is a way to build a twitter following of over 10,000 without really doing any work, but obviously you ain’t going to get it free. But if you can earn money with time spent elsewhere then its a no brainer. Buy some software and set it on auto then watch as your twitter following increases daily.

Tweet Adder

I have tried a few paid tools to grow my twitter following but Tweet Adder has to be the best. It has so many more options than it’s competitors, and runs without a glitch every time. Once you set the parameters it builds a list and targets these people automatically.

It will also schedule tweets and send bulk DM’s for you. It runs on Mac or PC and in my opinion is the only way to go when growing your twitter following.

1) Write Crappy Content

To make sure your content sucks I recommend you make it very, very long. Once you have the length down, take out any bullet points, numbers or paragraphs. Remember if it is easy to read then people are going to want to share it.

2) Talk About Yesterdays News

Make sure you are covering yesterdays stories, or even better last weeks stuff. I recommend topics like “Why Windows Vista Sucks” and “What Is Twitter?” or maybe “Is Obama The End Of Racism?”. All good topics that will serve you well over the coming months if not years.

What ever you do don’t add badges or widgets that help people submit the blog to social bookmarking sites, or tweet about it. These are sure-fire ways for a blog to go viral so you should avoid them at all costs.

4) Have Super Long Page Titles

Super long page titles is a great way to foil the twitterers who try to share your post. As long as your page title (eg Post Title | Website stuff) is about 135 characters then you can almost be guaranteed that any link added to the tweet will be cut short and not work. The best part is the person who tweeted it doesn’t even know!

5) Don’t Have Any Freinds

Once a post gets a bit of momentum it is ready to soar, make sure you don’t have any friends who can create this momentum. And if you do have friends, for goodness sake don’t tell them about your post! If you have twitter followers be careful not to leak a link about your post. If you feel like you must share, just remember the trick and delete the last few letters in the link.

The main 4 ways to monetize your blog in order of profitability:

1) AdSense.

AdSense is the simplest way to start monetizing you blog.

Adsense is CPC (Cost Per Click) advertising so you get paid when someone clicks on the link. Each click can be worth anything from 1c-$100 depending on your topic.

Here’s how to set it up in WordPress:

Sign up for AdSense with your google account at Google Adsense

Then install a plugin called Easy Adsenser to your WordPress blog.

Then set up your ads inside AdSense and copy and paste the code into Easy Adsenser in WordPress admin (Settings>Easy Adsenser).

Voila now you’re getting paid.

AdSense is the easiest to set up but gets the lowest returns.

2) Affiliate Ads.

When you promote someone else’s product on your website it is called affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is CPA (Cost Per Action) which means you get paid when a person clicks a link from your page then actually buys. In return you get percentage of the sale. If you have picked the right affiliate links to have on your website then these can get much better results that just CPC advertising with AdWords.

A great affiliate program to get started with is Amazon Associates. With Amazon if a customer clicks the link on your page then you get a commission on anything they buy at Amazon in that session. 3) Conextual.

Contextual advertising is usually just an extension of CPA affiliate ads. But instead of displaying ads for a product you write about it. Contextual advertisements have the highest CTR (Click Through Rate) because they are directly related to the information on your page. For example,If I was talking about cameras and I said “I got an awesome Canon PowerShot Digital Camera for my birthday” that would be a contextual link. You can click it and try it out of you like.. ;)

Once again Amazon Associates is a great program for contextual adds because almost anything you talk about they sell so why not link up.

Another way to implement contextual adds is to do a product review. If I use some software that has an affiliate program, I could write a whole post reviewing the software and then drop the affiliate link in at the end. If readers click through and join up I get paid. This is very effective when reviewing products that are related to your readership.

4) Sell Your Own Product.

Selling your own product is the ultimate in profitability because you don’t share the profit. Also you can sell you new products to your existing customer base making your business grow even faster. Obviously you need something to sell first, but maybe you could keep this in mind as a longer term goal.

If you can’t find anyone try broader search terms. For example if you blog about “German Shepherds” but you cant find any results then expand your search and try “Dogs” instead. Now you have the big twits you are looking for.

Put Your Twitter Details On Everything You Do.

If people like what you  say and want to hear more they will follow you on twitter. These are the best followers because they already dig you. Here are just some of the places you can add your twitter profile: – Your Blog (duh). – Forum Signatures. – Articles. – Guest posts on other blogs. – Your websites. – Email signature. – Other social networking sites. – Anywhere else people can interact with what you are already doing..

Search Twitter

At search.twitter.com you can search the public timeline for the last 30 days and follow people based on what they are talking about. For example if your blog is about German Shepherd dogs then you can search for the term “German Shepherd” (make sure you put “” around the phrase to get an exact match) and follow each of these people. As I check it now there are about 50 people who have tweeted about German Shepherds” in the last 24 hours. Thats 350 highly targeted followers every week, who would all surely enjoy your blog! A more common term like “money online” has 60 in the last hour, that’s 1440 target followers a day.

Don’t Get Suspended

With these tips you may be tempted to follow thousands of new tweeple. Try not to follow more than 20% more than people who follow you (eg 1,000 followers mean you can follow 1,200) otherwise you run the risk of getting your account suspended and then all your work is ruined. • Other people will follow the big twits, and their followers… that’s you :)

3. Be a useful twitterer.

• We don’t care about what you’re eating or if you have showered yet..

4. Post links that might be interesting to others.

• Make sure people know what they are linking to.

5. Tweet regularly but don’t clutter.

• Too many tweets will dilute the effect of any good tweets.

6. Write some articles about your topic and link to your twitter..

• This will help give you a more defined group of followers.

7. Start a blog and link to your twitter profile (Here’s mine).

• Then you can tweet about your blogs and people who follow you will actually be interested..
